Buy the under glaze paints and when you have finished painting return the item for glazing and firing.

Before the item is fired the colours will appear light and will rub off the piece. This item is not able to be used until it is fired.

Apart from Under Glaze Paints, if you do not want your piece fired you can decorate items that are not going to be used with Decopatch Paper, Acrylics, Foam Clay, and any other medium.
